Not to Say 03:49
I missed you this morning I thought of you all day long You're far away now with baby-- Your home's not my home. I dreamed of our mother I dreamed of our father too-- We're singing on opposite shores now, But I'm singing for you. I'll sing for our childhood I'll sing for my own damn good Sing to find the road I'll pave-- It's the only way Which is not to say That nothing here ever changes
2.
We'll take apart the winter, Divide it by what joys we know We'll say goodbye to wanting-- To open roads we'll say hello I've known a few to go too early I've known a few to leave us all behind Wander our dreams now They scatter our dreams Far from the earth now But never far from mind These hands are yours to hold We're dreaming side by side I'll know you when we're old If life let's us decide So hold me through this cold We're young and we are wild Sweet dreamer dream with me I'll be a dreamer's bride So take apart the winter Divide it by what joys we know We'll say goodbye to wanting-- To open roads, we'll say hello

California 04:22
California under pale grey skies It's a winter's day and sun is in your eyes Your eyes that hold the spark of day Your mind just like a sieve You always had the words to say But not the love to give I have let you walk the line with me And with your eyes so bright Oh still you cannot see That I have walked five miles for you And I would walk ten more If you were just to tell me dear That you want me through your door And a friendship that's based on the sea Let's the waves crash on and on and on and on And the sea is the center but you are not centered So we cannot go on And the waves crash on and on and on and on I can't stay that mad for long at you And with your eyes so sad I cave before I'm through But if I let you by my love then who is gonna pay? It won't be you-- I'll say that much Cuz you'll be on your way And the waves crash, the waves crash, the waves crash the waves And the waves crash, the waves crash, the waves.

Body Secrets 04:33
Your body's got secrets to hold Held in the deeps of its curves and its bones Your body's got secrets to keep But ask in the night it might tell while you sleep While you sleep Your body feels weak but it's strong The home of your soul where your heartstrings belong Give it time give it time to tell what has gone wrong Ask in the night you might not wait too long Wait too long Your body's your body's your own Your body your body's your only home Home of your soul
5.
Wander these rooms in search of an answer to a quest of mine I cried and I tried to find what to do with all this open time But I'm slurring my personal words so let's talk about the weather now-- Not even March and it's looking like spring Ground thawing out and birds starting to sing their morning songs Heart aches abound though they've got no reason to dwell in this house of ours-- I love you with all of the self I possess and the rest of me loves you more But I'm slurring my personal words so let's talk about the colors now-- It's white and it's blue and it's green and it's grey The harbor changes its light and its hue every hour of the day And the wilds are open in all our minds We've been caught in a cycle of concrete and steel but we still have time City grey can make way For verdant light The colors now are full, the colors now are full The colors now are fuller than they were Before you my love Yours are the hands that I wait for Yours are the eyes that steady my soul And your heart was the one mine cried out for All of those nights when I was alone But I'm slurring my personal words so let's talk about Oh anything now The colors are full Oh all of the light is wild, it's bright The colors now are full
6.
Morning came slow-- I was still dreaming It was the dream, not the day, that tasted real The shock of return here has me reeling I'm on a hill, in a car without a wheel Everyone and their mother says it'll be hell to pay Oh I know-- I knew it all along So why do we stay, why do we pay Months turn to years while our minds slip away Oh it's not forever, baby, but it's home All of my friends are on the G train-- Except for Fox and Chris-- they're at my house. They're looking for faster ways to get there And for better ways to live than hand to mouth Everyone and their mother says it'll be hell to pay Oh I know-- I knew it all along So why do we stay, why do we pay Months turn to years while our minds slip away Oh it's not forever, baby, but it's home It's not forever, baby, but it's home

Slatish grey the sky And underfoot the stones, Which wore your boots down to their bones You walked for fear of slowing down Enough to hear the question-- Leaves fell brown Crisp October air You were there clean clothes clean hair Without a purpose or a plan But fresh losses in the pockets Where you planted your cold hands Walk pretty Don't you hope to capture Don't you hope to catch a stranger's eyes Be wise-- don't be quick to fall for the kind disguise Walk pretty, walk pretty Walk pretty, walk pretty Those London streets-- You didn't know the lonely stand apart You read meaning music art in passing glances, catching eyes-- You fancied yourself wise When you among the prowling wolves of every foggy street Dressed the sheep Oh you didn't know the pain of the elite And how it turns the spirit mean Oh you didn't know Oh you didn't know Slatish grey the sky And underfoot the stones, Which wore your boots down to their bones You walked for fear of slowing down Enough to hear the question

Lullaby 03:19
Stay awake, Stay awake, While the day dissolves, the fire fades In a while, The night will hold Her weary arms around the world And you'll lift your head to meet her gaze While she spins you in a dark blue haze She'll whisper you need only wait For life to sweetly hold Stay awake, Stay awake-- Don't let the darkness take the day But if you do, You'll be held safe By the lady in her velvet cape And you'll lift your head to meet her gaze, While she spins you in a soft blue haze She'll whisper you need only wait For life to sweetly hold

about

The Colors Now, Part 1 was recorded over the course of three years, along with its sister album, Part 2, to be released in April. The recording process followed our move back to Maine from Brooklyn, a marriage, a crazy election, the building of a house, illness and wellness, an optimistically early album release tour, and friendships enduring. These songs are testaments to all of these changes, and to the things that have held steady throughout.

Special Thanks:

to Chris Doyle for endless technical assistance and emotional support;

to Danny Fisher-Lochhead for wading with me through all the challenges of growing and communicating creative ideas, for listening to endless drafts of lyrics and chords, for supporting me in this project from its very inception;

to Fox Schwach, who took this project on fully, patiently, and with a great eye for opportunities for experimentation. In my ideal vision, everyone who partakes in a creative collaboration comes away with the sense that their individual voice has been heard. Fox has been a great facilitator of that vision, and in so being, has brought his own engineering voice into this record (and not just on track 6). Without him, this would all still be a pile of shaky demos, recorded on my phone.
